A tiny new molecule offers hope for cystic fibrosis

Scientists in Berlin have created a tiny molecule that may one day help repair the root cause of cystic fibrosis (CF), one of the most common fatal hereditary diseases worldwide.


Scientists in Berlin have created a tiny molecule that may one day help repair the root cause of cystic fibrosis (CF), one of the most common fatal hereditary diseases worldwide. In most people with CF, a key protein in the lungs is misshapen or shaped incorrectly, causing thick mucus, repeated infections, and breathing difficulties. The new molecule, called a nanobody, is small enough to enter lung cells and help this faulty protein fold into the right shape so it can work again. In lab tests using cells from CF patients, the nanobody improved the protein’s function and worked even better when combined with current CF medicines. Researchers say this approach could eventually lead to stronger, more targeted treatments for people who don’t fully benefit from existing therapies.
